Many of us will eat and drink more than we usually do during the festive period. And while it’s good to treat yourself every now and then, it can have an effect on our bodies. One expert shared the best ways to prevent bloating over the holidays.

Speaking with, Ashleigh Tosh from Goal Getters by Muscle Food, said: “Let’s be honest, we all over-indulge on Christmas Day and why shouldn’t we?

“The food, snacks and all those chocolates are just too delicious and too tempting.

“The downside is the day after when you wake up feeling sluggish and lethargic thanks to all the food you’ve eaten the day before.

“To beat the bloat, we’ve put together a few pointers to help Brits wake up feeling refreshed.

“These are really simple tips and ones that will keep you celebrating throughout the holidays.”

Skip on salt

Christmas dinner can be high in salt.

Avoid putting more salt on your food and if you can, try and avoid too many high salt snacks.

Keep hydrated

We all have a few too many drinks at Christmas and the booze combined with all the high salt food will leave us thirsty and dehydrated.

Try and drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Avoid the sprouts

High fibre vegetables, like sprouts will make you bloat.

Another reason not to put them on your Christmas dinner menu.

Get moving

A little bit of exercise will help relieve that bloated feeling.

We’re not suggesting a long run or an intense gym session – instead try a nice festive walk with your family or friends.

Eat slowly

Make sure you chew your food rather than shovel it down.

When you eat fast, you take in more air while chewing which adds to the gassy, bloated feeling.

Ditch fizzy drinks

If you’re feeling bloated and heavy post Christmas, avoid fizzy drinks as these contain lots of sugar and gas that will only make your bloating worse.

Eat several light meals

If you’re feeling bloated on Boxing Day, eating a few smaller meals throughout the day can help.

Try having four to six smaller meals as opposed to two to three large ones.

Have a herbal tea

Sip on herbal tea to ease the bloat.

Ginger and peppermint are both good for the digestive system.
